Curriculum Writers

We seek experienced curriculum writers to assist in the development of Different Ways of Knowing middle grades curriculum materials in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. Writing projects are available on a freelance basis. When applying by e-mail, please attach writing samples of middle grades curriculum lessons or units you have developed.

Qualifications

  • Middle or high school teaching experience in mathematics, science, social studies, or language arts
  • Experience writing curriculum for middle grades students
  • Degree in mathematics, science, social studies, or language arts, or a secondary education degree with an emphasis in one of the four content areas

Responsibilities

  • Work with Galef staff to develop content outlines and to complete and revise drafts according to established schedules
  • Participate in conference calls, meetings, and writing workshops to discuss submitted materials
  • Collaborate with arts education specialists to explore ways to infuse various forms of the arts (visual, drama, music, dance, and media arts) into curriculum materials to accelerate and enhance standards-based content learning

Freelance Graphic Design/Production Assistants


To assist in the development of Different Ways of Knowing middle grades curriculum products, we seek graphic designers/production specialists. Work is available on a freelance, project-by-project basis.

Qualifications

  • Solid PC and Mac skills (Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, and Excel)
  • General knowledge of typography and page layout
  • Functional understanding of prepress and print production
  • Ability to assist with photo and art selection
  • Experience in Web page development and Dreamweaver knowledge a plus

Responsibilities

  • Work with Senior Project Editor and other Galef staff to design page layouts for curriculum products
  • Develop functional desktop publishing templates for internal and external use
  • Use desktop publishing templates to typeset and format documents according to approved design and style
  • Assist in the creation of technical art including tables, charts, and graphs
  • Sizing, cropping, and retouching of photographic images, as well as digital and original artwork
  • Prepare files for printing
  • Design and produce other types of documentation as needed
  • Help with updating and maintaining the Institute’s Web site

Freelance Illustrators


We seek illustrators interested in producing original artwork for Different Ways of Knowing middle grades curriculum products. Work is available on a freelance, project-by-project basis. Upper-division illustration majors still in school are encouraged to apply. Please submit electronic samples of your work (or a link to a Web site featuring your work) when forwarding your resume. Portfolio will be required at time of interview.

Qualifications

  • Clear yet engaging illustration style that appeals to middle grades students
  • Ability to follow provided art specifications and to incorporate suggested revisions into final pieces
  • General understanding of prepress and print production
  • Experience with educational publications or curriculum products a plus
  • Digital illustrators preferred, although those working in traditional media will also be considered

Responsibilities

  • Work with Senior Project Editor and other Galef staff to develop original artwork for curriculum products, and potentially other types of projects as needed
  • Complete initial sketches, incorporate suggested revisions, and prepare final artwork according to established deadlines
  • Prepare final artwork for production (if working digitally)
