Galef Voted a Member
of the Public Education Network (PEN)
The Galef Institute has been voted a member of Public
Education Network (PEN) and its community-based Local
Education Fund. As a PEN member, the Galef Institute
will participate in the Standards and Accountability Initiative,
whose goal is to support and challenge public school districts
to do a better job of serving low-income children and their
families. The institute will work collaboratively with two
other member organizations in Southern California, the Los
Angeles Educational Partnership and the Alliance for Student
Achievement, to strengthen our local school partnerships.
As a Local Education Fund, Different Ways of Knowing joins
Local Education Funds across the country dedicated to increasing
student achievement in public schools and building broad-based
support for quality public education. Local Education Funds
are independent of school districts; focus on improving and
reforming the public school system as a whole; serve a significant
population of disadvantaged children; and are organized as
an ongoing entity with a professional full-time staff and
board of directors reflective of the community served.
“Regionally, we look forward to working with Local Education Funds in
Houston, Detroit, New York, Boston, and other member organizations to support
the conversation between Different Ways of Knowing schools and their districts
and community-based organizations,” said Galef President Linda Johannesen.
